College of Aeronautics
Message from the Director of Research
The College of Aeronautics (COA) is committed to building upon its excellent talent and facility bases in order to pursue new applied research and development (R&D) opportunities. New endeavors in aviation human factors, safety, and airport management R&D realms will be especially beneficial to students enrolled in our graduate programs. Our vision also includes a research component for undergraduate students as well, as we see quality research as the foundation of any academic program.
As we develop targeted research thrusts over the next five years, we fully anticipate the COA to be recognized as one of the premier universities conducting aviation-related research. This is an exciting moment for the COA as we embark upon the development of an expanded research base that will benefit both students and university alike.

I am an active aviation research psychologist, working as the Chair of the Human Factors program at Florida Tech and Director of Research for the College of Aeronautics. As such, I regularly develop and participate in research efforts generally related to human performance issues, aviation psychology, man-machine systems, artificial intelligence applications, and human-computer interaction and design, among others. I also consult with several agencies both in the Orlando area and elsewhere. Most of this work is for the Department of Defense and involves the development of training systems using intelligent tutor technology, virtual training technology, and the integration of artificial intelligence methodologies. Lately, I've been doing some expert witness consulting on various aircraft accidents for the U.S. Dept. of Justice. My Ph.D. is in Applied Experimental Psychology. I also have a Master's degree in Theology/Pastoral Studies from Loyola University in New Orleans. John Deaton, Ph.D. |
